Current Lumia Phones Will Not Get Upgraded To Windows Phone 8
Microsoft unveiled on Wednesday at the Windows Phone Developer Summit a powerful next-generation Windows Phone 8 operating system, but those with existing Windows Phone models looking for an upgrade to the new version have been closed out of the fun.
Windows Phone 7 and 7.5 devices will not be able to upgrade to Windows Phone 8, but Microsoft will offer a version 7.8 update for existing devices, including features such as a redesigned user interface.
News about an expected Windows Phone 8 announcement circulated around the web all week, but it was questionable whether or not Windows’ early adopters would be closed out of the upgrade.
The news may not sit well for existing Windows users, especially those who recently bought the much-hypedNokia Luma 900.
But the difficulties in upgrading Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8 revolves around the fact that a different development code is used with Windows 8, which supports next-generation hardware and multi-core processors. This also opens the door for more manufacturers to capitalize on creating new devices that support the upgrade.
The Windows Phone 8 supports dual- and quad-core support, SD card expansion, a redesigned home screen and near field communications (NFC) technology support, so manufacturers can turn handsets into virtual wallets
